Scandinavia CALLING

Sad fact is that I will not be present in my physical body at this years Show'nTell.
But for my contribution I will arrange a VIDEO Skype call interview between a Norwegian Hotel worker and one of the Hotel staff from the Lord Milner Hotel .
If needed translators will be used and we will have a Norwegian/Afrikaans live chat.

Yes thats right - gone they are you cant have one no more..

But dont despair - you can still stay in the comfort of the Lord Milner Hotel... ohhho its SOO worth the money.. we are talking real luxury here ..
Or, if your are scared of the resident ghosts why not stay in the nice garden suites outside..they have the little chocolates on the pillows too darlings.

The Hotel and the Garden Mews are all R340 per night for bed and breakfast- note that is PER PERSON sharing - so if you book a double room that is 2x R340 per night so do your sums right.

Matjiesfontein - THE MOST HAUNTED TOWN

"The Lord Milner Hotel is reputed to be haunted by a group of cheerful ghosts. Laughter can be heard in empty rooms and the sound of billiards is heard when there is no one there.."

"The Logan family entertained visitors so often that they were always tolerant of the unseen residents. One particular unseen resident caused no trouble, except that he/she could not open doors and would rattle the door handles until some obliging member of the family would open it.
One day after Jennifer Buist's wedding, she was too engrossed in packing her gifts to let the ghost in, and the rattling reached an impatient crescendo. Eventually she threw the door open, saying "fine, come in if you must, don't make such a damn noise about it". She felt a puff of cold air rush past her and the ghost rattled its way through the window and was never heard or felt again."
"Another ghost is supposed to be a wounded British soldier with his arm in a sling and a bloody bandage around his head, who stands at the turn-off to the Memorial Cemetery. Travellers, thinking he is injured, stop to help and he promptly vanishes.."

We have a cinema director!

GREAT news! Luke has volunteered to be this year's cinema director. Please get in touch with him if you would like to screen anything over the weekend (that means you, Dan and Rohan...so far). Bearing in mind that it's pretty cold at night out there in the Karoo, lets keep the short flieks for outside and save the longer ones for inside in front of the fire-place.

You can get hold of Luke at this email: johnluked@gmail.com

From John-Luke Hutchinson
-"yo, I intend to sight see... and participate but I dont think I can say both will be equivalant in quantity.
My basic concept is something along the following lines... depending:

-something found on the interent.
-a discussion on democracy (using some of these documentaries)
-an installation concerning the world being flat (Thomas Friedman) and the long emergency (Howard James Kunstler)
-screening the film 'I am not there'

I really, really look forward to this festival."

Twin Peaks on a winters night

"Hello Matjies!!
We have a nice little event planned for next Thursday 12 June in Cape Town. Those of you who were at last year's Show 'n Tell will remember the Breaking News team, roaming around with a camera filming all our dubious antics. (If you do not remember, you are excused as we all know how easily the gin&tonics slip down in that town...)
Well, the footage has finally been edited and we're going to meet up to watch it. The venue is the Constantia Nek Restaurant (oldest restaurant in Cape Town apparently!) and the idea is that you can come and eat supper if you like, or just drop by for a drink and then we'll screen the footage. There's a space to have a bit of a dance so we'll see what we can do about hijacking the music system.

Please make your own bookings for supper. 7:30 with the screening at 9pm.

Leave your razors at home

Matjies. This guy says that he will be growing a moustache as his contribution this year and is challenging guys (and girls) out there to out-grow this baby!

Bring Your Binoc's, Baby!

Hi guys
The year was 1986. Luminous pink roll down socks were all the rage (or was that just me?). My family and I headed to a spot not far from Matjiesfontein to see Haleys Comet. I remember there being a lot of sheep shit. We had a rad Autovilla. I'd give anything to have it back today...sigh...
Anyway. This all got me to thinking about my contribution at Matjies this year...I want to explore the Karoo sky by night. I plan to head down to the planetarium (last visited, also around 86, for mandatory crap school trip..) and learn more about the sky and then share at Matjies. Does anyone have an idea where I can loan a telescope for the weekend? I want to step up a little star viewing station with some hot toddies, a telescope and the stars above. Bring binoc's baby!

See you there,
Sam

(Moon photo c/o davidanthonyporter from Flickr. He has a CC licence that says its cool to share this photo. What a rad guy.)

I have spent a good and valuable hour searching for a photo of said luminous pink socks. But, I tell you, there are just no quality pictures of the subject out there. Sad.

" We are: Toast Coetzer and Rebecca Hodes

And we will bring to show & tell:
I will play with my band The Buckfever Underground and Rebecca will read a poem and also bring a local short film DVD called ‘Andre’ to screen." Toast
" Just to let you know that I will not be reading a poem at maitjies. I don't know where toast got that from - he is mad. I would rather give a workshop on how to eat one's own toenails than read a poem I had written. I would however like to screen some South American safe-sex cartoons. They are half an hour in total, and wonderful, old-style awareness initiatives with a chuckle.
Also, I would like to screen a South African short film called 'Andre' about an existentially challenged male model in Cape Town. Am trying to get the directors to come along to the weekend, in which case they will take over the screening.
Looking forward to the weekend! Much love, Rebecca "

"We’d like to sleep in the same room we did last year, which is in the hotel, up the stairs, straight down the corridor, last room on your right. If at all possible."
