My first Matjies

what was special about Matjies? hmmm, so much really that can be said in three words: people, place and showntell. There was so much to absorb... Jewels and Clinton put some hard work into creating picture. The space olympics got us all excited. The musical sounds of Andy, Buckfever Underground and were just incredible.

the haphazard
the spontaneity
the well thought out and articulately planned
the way every one was just at home and stoked
the sunshine on the grass
the finer detail of poems and origami cranes
the ice ice cold swim in the river
all of the above and more...

a gem of a weekend.
cant wait for next year and the next year and the year after that.
really. *

dreaming

"Most people believe that you have to have your eyes closed to dream, that you have to distance yourself from reality. But the opposite is true. The best dreams are the ones you have with your eyes open. You call them dreams but they’re really ideas, projects and visions. They have the same consistency as life."

Jess Tyrrell: Bathroom Poet

Wayfarer, the road
is your footsteps, nothing else.
Wayfarer, there is no road
you open it as you walk it.
The walking opens the road.
And when you turn your eyes back
and see the path you'll never
walk again
Wayfarer, there is no road
but wakes on the sea.

need I say more........?

Fliipin Cool I tell you.

It has to be said: That Julia Merrett is one awesome gal and Marc is pretty rad too. Thanks to them for such a flippin kiff time. I know how much time (a lot) n energy (loads) they put into it before, during and after to make sure that everything was so easy for the rest of us to just enjoy and all just because they are such cool people who like having fun with other cool people, but I think that definately makes them the coolest people by far! Shot guys you rock big time.

tudor, potplant, nathan, snowcapped matroosberg, the hotel cat, late saturday night in the window, marietjie's hair halo'd by the late afternoon sun, the ph

oto shoot, greg l eating a fork of something or other from sam, righard on the solo, back-lawn shenanigans, fake swans on real water, the mural on which the sun will shine even when it's raining all night.

and so lekker it was. thanks to all you very very nice people.

maitjies post blues syndrome

Do not stress people. If you are sitting at home post maitjies with a dampened creative spark from all the liquor you consumed at the bar on the weekend trying to juice whats left out of you to produce something half interesting do not fear ... There is worse out there

Our very own breed of rainbow-nation-spastic-sesame-street-woolen-dredded-tokoloshi 2010 soccer mascot

And if this doesn't help with the brain drain just remember that there are a few of us who are far worse off. Namely the boys that will surly be sitting on pillows right now after being caught red handed trying to open a tap with other other hands ... You know who your are ...

Yes - I agree - the world is a much better place back in maitjiesville

still hanging with vikings near the north pole

please be so kind and share your pictures and comments on this blog - those of us who could not be there the last weekend would love to see what it was like!

From Karoo to New York

Hey Matjies.

Khumba is having a great time in New York. He's not that good at hailing cabs and eating hotdogs on the pavement so we took him to Central Park to do some grazing. Lots of people think he is 'adorable' but he is sometimes overwhelmed by all the meetings, film screenings and parties. He says he would rather be in the Karoo with all of you than munching on the Big Apple.

The Tee Party Project

Dan Pinch writes...

"Before Facebook status updates were even a twinkle in the Internet's eye you wore your mood on your chest in Tee shirt form. From oh so ironic Heavy Metal t-shirts to cutesy wutsie puppies to your message that "no one knows your a lesbian" a t shirt is like a personality billboard you wear on your chest.

In honour of the T shirts contribution to fashion the South African Street Style blog is launching the tee party project with an aim to capture the most outlandish, boldest and stylish T-shirts in South Africa (and perhaps even the world). It will launch at the Matjiesfontein Show and Tell and what i'm asking for is that everyone brings their favorite most loved t-shirt along, wears it on Saturday afternoon and tells me the story behind it. I'll then make them famous on http://www.southafricanstreetstyle.wordpress.com/ and anyone else I can pester with it. I'll be wearing my much loved blue "Catch Your Dream" T-shirt with a winged horse on it, come and find me."

Scandinavia - Karoo will connect via Skype video this weekend.. Im planning an interview between a Lord Milner Hotel hotel staff and a Norwegian stranger.
Keep your eyes and ears out re when and where over the weekend this will be happening.. Alex van Heerden will be the translater..

"stuart has a great contribution He printed pics of matjiesfontein itself, mounted them onto board and then cut out puzzles. they can be presents to give to people as prizes or thank yous. Hotel staff etc as well!"

Masqueraids

"You be careful. People in masks cannot be trusted " - The Princess Bride

Find your disguise for Saturday night . . .
Bring or come make your hystorical hysteria headress or mask
from Sat 12h00 on the lawns under the wishing tree.
Bring gems, plumes and the like.

" All great things must first wear terrifying and monstrous masks in order to inscribe themselves on the hearts of humanity."  - Friedrich Nietzsche

Improvising is very in right now.

If you are a person who likes old things..like viewfinders, or listening to stories or telling stories or looking at pretty things or sitting on blankets and pillows in cosy places or listening to music that sounds like fairytales..then you should come to this.

Introducing... JUMPOLOGY

"Philippe Halsman was a photographer in the earlier part of the 20th century. He took the first portraits of people jumping He coined the term ‘Jumpology’ as he believed that in the moment that you jump your attention is mostly directed toward the act of jumping and the mask that you wear falls away. One can in that instance see your true essence.

So to explore his theory, we will bring a little trampoline and get everyone jumping to show their true colours and take their photies to tell them what it is.

And on top of that jumping is good for everything – makes you laugh, helps your body detoxify, gets the blood flowing, …the benefits are endless.

Come on…we’ve all wanted to see ourselves fly just a little."

Space Olympics

"This is a real opportunity for South Africans to actually win a gold medal at an olympic event in 2008 with the added incentive of the winning team representing SA in the 2012 Olympics in London.
This comprises of 3 events, all of which involve contestants traveling on unique gravity defying Space Hoppers actually used by scientists in the recent Hadron Collider experiment. Inappropriate head gear will be provided and must be worn at all times. Contestants and teams will be organised prior to the event.

Events: Triple Moon Bounce, Speed Hop and Relay.

Event hosted by real astronauts."
- Claire and Andy B

Priya and her paints

Priya will be bringing face paints to throw into the mix. Think outside the box, think face painting for grown ups...

miraculous, futuristic poetry.. or something

"I shall display a MIRACULOUS MYCHANICAL MIND! A MACHINE that THINKS! This creation, an evidence of modern ENLIGHTENMENT and PROGRESS, is able to REASON as a MAN DOES, and spew forth from it's gear-filled guts POETRY and PROSE, so BOGGLING to the senses that is appeareth UNLISTENABLE. I shall carry this DEVICE with me, and read from it's ramblings to those FEARLESS enough to confront the FUTURE! [sic]

(Postscript. I am currently confounded by an gear that refuses to mesh. The mind's appearance is dependent upon technical considerations. Sanity will not be refunded.)"

If you bump into Bryn, ask him what he's on about.

"My backup plan, in case of technical difficulties, is to wander around in something ridiculous reading Edward Lear _DRAMATICALLY_."

rokkies and suits and bowler hats and your grannies coat

Dressing up is fun. I use the term broadly so go wild... or keep it subtle. Saturday night is dress up/vintage dinner but please remember that the dress code in hotel restaurant is semi formal. Keep the chicken suit for the lawn games.

But don't stop there! The whole weekend is a chance to play. Wear things that might get a sideways glance in Cape Town. Don't be shy now...

And the clothes swap might be just the place to refresh your wardrobe too so please contribute to take part!
