A dispatch from Matjiesfontein headquaters:
Just a reminder that Matjiesfontein is in fact a declared herritage site which basically means that stuff here is OLD and valuable. The antiques here are real,
so,... basically... treat it with respect.
Tread lightly. Don’t smoke where it tells you not too. Don’t thro uggly butts on the floor. It is plain not cool, In fact its miff.
Over and out.

A veg out shout out

This is a shout out (and warning) to all vegetarians...The hotel will do their best to provide some vegetarian options but remember that Matjiesfontein is a small Karoo town where they think chicken is a vegetable so don't expect gourmet or wholefood cuisine.
If you are vegetarian, please could you email us and let us know BEFORE the weekend.

Also, there are no shops in the town - the coffee shop has a menu which has a couple of veggie options so bring some provisions just in case.

ninjas are maitjies too

i dunno....im sure it was a ninja...we were all alone walking under the moonlight, no one in sight for miles. me - quietly irritated as usual. him - prancing like the nob he is. there was no wind, but for a moment a slight breeze seemed to rustle the veld around us. i caught a glimpse of something shiny in a tree and, startled, looked up automatically. a distant whirrr grew closer, louder, faster and ended in a sudden thuk next to me.

the second thud was of his body falling at my feet, a shiny metallic star buried amongst his eyes... he had been thrown with a shuriken...he reached up to me for help... i stepped back.

and in the midnight hour i cried: 'more! more! more!'

like the sudden crack of lightning leading a storm on the highveld, a shrill shreak came from overhead and the air filled with the sound of spinning stars. each thuk thuk thuk pressed him back down to the dirt where he belonged. he lay, motionless, his wide eyes frozen in time.

there are ninjas amongst us...they follow me where i go, helping clear the path of pests, prancers and anything they feel like taking out. im coming to matjies, best you keep your eyes peeled.

Magical Sundays

Leila and I are going to be staying one extra night in Matjiesfontein because it's my birthday on the 4th, but really because we couldn't get a train ticket for Sunday, only on Monday at the crack of dawn. So, we were wondering if anyone else was staying on for one more night?
If so, let's all share a cottage!!

Leila and I aren't millionaires yet and to stay in the hotel for the last night is a bit pricey for us.
If you'd like to stay with us, please mail me here: lulafowler@gmail.com

Toyi-Toyi: How to

Stressed? Life getting you down? Or is your bum in the butter?

Either way, its always good to have something to toyi-toyi about, if even just for health and joy benefits. But of course, first you need to know how to toyi-toyi. Friday night in the bar will see our first practice and screening of a version of the instructional video (clips of which are seen above and below). There will also be an opportunity to make signs with which to communicate your toyi-toyi ing message. On saturday afternoon, we hope to find a moment to toyi-toyi down maitjiesfontein main road. Can anyone film this? Be sure to bring clothing you can TT in and ponder what you might need to jump up and down about (rhythmically of course) in your life.

Yours sincerely

just for shits, here's a crap boring school i once drove past somewhere in the Northwest.

ok marginal change of plan

sorry, I didn't chat to Stephen properly before that previous post. Stephen in fact won't be bringing his drum kit as he's only going to bring his laptop (we're going to do our Buckfever as Pet Shot Boykies impression) but any guitarist or bassist or fun loving individual with slick dance moves is still welcome to join us during our set.

oh yes - if you want, come check (the full) buckfever play this week thursday (wellington), friday (stellenbosch) and saturday nights (cape town). wobble over to our site for full details.

i thank you all/ kamsamnida

some of our matjies are travelling from faraway places for show 'n tell

"i'm coming to matjies from san francisco! i can barely breathe properly for all the excitement. so, i'd like to contribute a small exhibition of drawings (some from matjies 2007) in a little nook somewhere. maybe one of the hotel parlours- and people could whisk by with whiskey in highball glasses. and, if i am really lucky, i'll convince gene or gustavo to let me sing something with them." - abbey

chance to fame

here is a fantastic idea for you if you have not nailed your contribution down yet - highway to 30sec of fame..

"Hi everyone
‘Cause Gil can sadly not join us anymore, Buckfever is a bit decimated – ie it’s just me and Stephen – so we’re keen to jam with any of you. For those unfamiliar with us, we’re more or less a jamband anyway. Stephen plays drums, I play nothing, I talk. So I think Stephen can bring his drumkit unless someone else already is and doesn’t mind sharesies. We can do with bassist/ guitarist/ anyone. So consider us the jamband where you can come rock out for 30 minutes or so.
So – shall Stephen bring his drums then?
Or will someone else?
And who’s keen to join us?"

Word, Toast

it's never too late to have a happy childhood

"How about we bring board and materials for all the participants in the weekend to create a giant mural over the course of the weekend?" - Landon and Leigh

afrobeats 'n treats

"We have been asked by Debs (and volunteered as musicians) to create soundscapes and improvised music in a Jazz/World/Exp vein, during the Koek Installation on Saturday evening" - Lisa

"We are also thinking of doing a night time treasure hunt with head torches " Carly & Landia

"We'll give the teams a headlamp each to help them stay on track and hopefully not blind each other. Think we'll stay at a fixed point for any teams needing to return for additional clues... Should be good fun :) "
