Pack a snack pack
The lord milner hotel has a limited vegetarian menu, I repeat, limited vegetarian menu (so limited that you have to request a vegetarian meal, it's not on the menu). The coffee shop is open in the day serving light meals like salads, sandwiches and scones.
And don't forget maatjies, there are NO shops (or ATMs) in matjiesfontein so pack cash and snacks for those late night snack-attacks.
Little chop of horrors
"I wish to do botanical piece entitled "Little chop of horrors". Its a surgical number set in a dark room. With the aid of my trusty buxom assistant and dissection skills (honed to cleaver sharpness through my years of botanical dissection), I shall be distributing entrails from severed cadavers. Naturally, ones heightened senses may pick up a waft of garlic or a tang of tomato sauce, but rest assured these are Mercedes-genuine body parts. Cue the sound of tuneless violins." - Dr. Dave "Mad Scientist" Gwynne-Evans

Calling all professional knitters, renegade crocheters and those with a fetish for wool...
"Hi y’all, I would love to create a gigantic “I heart Matjies” knitting circle, the end result which will be a beautiful “I heart Matjies “quilt!
Knitters and crocheters, young and old, experienced or just starting out are invited to participate in a collaborative knitting installation. All materials will be supplied, however remnant wool is gladly accepted. Experience is not necessary." - Fiona

did you know
We are so very sad that the 5th Show 'n Tell will be happening without the King Of Matjiesfontein. What a big privilege to have know him - a free spirited open hearted fun loving wonder
As a contribution I was planning to have a crown ceremony to David this year.. instead we will dedicate Show 'n Tell 2010 to him.
Here are few facts on mr Rawdon
"In the late 1960s, David Rawdon, a hotelier par excellence, whose claim to fame was the establishing of the well-known Lanzerac Hotel in Stellenbosch and the Marina Hotel in Hermanus, purchased Matjiesfontein Village.
After performing extensive renovations on the hotel, utilising the wealth of antiques gathered during his world travels, Mr. Rawdon re-opened the property in 1970 and renamed it The Lord Milner Hotel."
"His efforts resulted in the village being declared a National Monument in 1979."
Lanzerac Hotel: "The good looking and magnetic young David Rawdon could only have dreamt of the success that the Lanzerac Hotel was to enjoy when he opened the door to the public in August 1959. With the help of his mother, Marie Rawdon and hotelier brother, Graham, he’d bought the property for R36 000. He then spent a year of intense renovation and restructuring, turning fowl pens, stables, cow sheds and kraals into fetching bedrooms that for the next 30 odd years beckoned travelers from home and abroad. Rawdon was no modern millionaire hotel magnate - money was in scarce supply and with a small team of builders he designed and oversaw most of the work himself. He went from one auction and yard sale to the next in the neighboring countryside buying up neglected furniture and follies which freshened up into smart period pieces, many of which are still in residence at the hotel today."
Thank you so much for letting us play xxx

Long live the King of the Castle
Sad news, maatjies. David Rawdon, the owner of the Lord Milner Hotel passed away on Friday 13th August at the age of 85. It's hard to imagine Matjiesfontein without him...let alone Show 'n Tell. If it wasn't for David's spirit of adventure, mischief, his irreverence and love of play, theatrics, and all things beautiful and magical, Show 'n Tell would have never found a home.
Home is where the heart is, we love and miss you David.
The horror...the horror
"I'm thinking of doing a little on-the-spot film-making, using friends/characters that are there for the weekend, cutting in a little of the action that's happening, and using the hotel as a location. The thought so far is to do a mockumentary murder-mystery romantic comedy horror, depending on the characters. The thought is to shoot mostly on the first two days and do a little edit in the night - perhaps even show it on the last evening?" - Jolene

Good sport
Last year's Matjies vs Maatjies soccer match was a blisteringly good game - competitive, spirited, and with great audience participation in the form of opinionated mothers and streakers.
Matjies soccer 2010 is going to be even better, now that we're all pro spectators and vuvu-players. If you'd like to be on the team, email the good Captain Adam Mokoena (adcoops1980@gmail.com)

We also played netball in 2009 - it was a tough match, infinitely more hard-core than the soccer taking place on the neighbouring field. There was bleeding, cheating and cussing. Just like we remember it from Primary School. We need a captain for 2010 - so ladies, if you're a born leader, fleet-of-foot, and know your Goal Attacks from your Goal Shooters, step right up!
