Dial-a-fireman

need some fire action to go with your contribution?
call daniel, show 'n tell's very own fire-man:
073 567 3731

"If anyone needs some spontaneous entertainment I'll arrive fully equipped, in an outfit to suit any occasion. And if its not dark enough for fire... I'll have some sunlight surprises on the side as well."

the wildest men this side of the karoo will be in matjiesfontein

"Me and my friend Frauke will be doing two things together:

1) Communal foot-soak

2) Wild man get-go every morning in acknowledgement of the man (every morning 5 min of a story at the appropriate time about a wild man. We are working on an image that has something to do with David Rawdon but that that represents the wild man)" - Lyall

pannekoek en moer koffie

keep an eye open for the spontaneous pannekoek en moer koffie stand that will open at random times and in equally random places over the course of show 'n tell....why? because pancakes make people happy, that's why.

Ask Dom to do something Fucking Amazing

"We know the rules of show 'n tell and we've internalized them. We have no doubt that lots of people will be doing fucking amazing things creatively. Dom on the other hand is fucking amazing. She is the thing in itself, the immanentization of fucking amazing. Therefore saying that she will contribute creatively by being Fucking Amazing is no small thing or an insignificant addition to the program. Nor is it a creative act of lesser order than architecture or taking a corner perfectly. We just reckon she's Fucking Amazing and stuff flows from that assertion.

She's already on your blog wearing a T-shirt reading "Ek wil vir Jaco+Z-dog naai". That's fucking amazing, and I can assure you neither Zander or myself are deluded enough to have made that line up.

I trust you'll have no qualms with accepting her contribution.

Sincerely,
Jaco van Schalkwyk"

milnerton

"I will show some work from a decade-long project documenting the life of the Milnerton Market in Cape Town.
I will also read some excerpts from commissioned essays by Ivan Vladislavic, Ivor Powell and Professor Michael Godby, as well as explain the principles which underly the structure of an upcoming book and photographic exhibition.

Who knows, maybe you feature."

Jaco + Z Dog - aka The Punks

these Johannesburg PUNKS are heading towards  Show 'n Tell !
" your grandmother is guaranteed to find Jaco en Z-dog offensive. Their debut EP, Eerste Leerstelling, should probably come with a parental advisory warning along the lines of: "Jaco en Z-dog contains strong language, crunching guitar riffs and a healthy slab of satire. Consume at your own risk."

Matjies,

How sad to be separated from my playmates for another year. Alas, alak, the letter of the law calls for absolute duty.

Our warmest thoughts and robust love are with the Merret family during this painful time. And too, we remember the inimitable David Rawdon - impresario extraordinaire.

I do hope that the fine organisers of this festival of revelry will continue their commendable work, blowing the pututu and summoning the folk to gambol on the grass and participate in play because;

“Play is older than culture, for culture, however inadequately defined, always presupposes human society, and animals have not waited for man to teach them their playing.”

With love,
Amilcar

Thursday, 16 September 2010

who says you can't play with your heritage?

"Adam and I are keen to organise 'heritage' games alongside the soccer match. Our ideas so far are 'jukskei' (which involves throwing horse shoes around wooden stakes), an olive pip spitting competition (a slightly more palatable version of 'bok-drolletjie-spoeg'), the stocking-around-the-legs jumping game that little girls play, etc...if you can think of any maatjies who are at a loose end and might want to help us with this, please send them our way!" - Taryn

dont drink the water

The grand antiquated Lord Milner Hotel's pipes are a little rusty .. we suggest you avoid drinking the tap-water.. we speak from experience trust us -  if your body doesnt like it it doesnt like it and you 'll know it....

Pack some extra water in your car for the weekend

Maatjies from the other side

"So it is my great misfortune that yet again my life has blocked me from participating in Matjies.... :(
I still have not had the chance to play with you all there, and i so regret that I cannot! I hope this does not inconvenience your plans at all, and i hope its not to late to remove my contribution from the program.

My contribution from afar, is to practice a séance on the saturday night, where I try conjure the matjies creatures into my house.... scary, but a necessary task!

LOVE YOU ALL - DYL"

Fly your flag

"In keeping with the heritage theme, I'd like to contribute a flag making. I'll supply muslin, string, and some basic arts n' crafts supplies, but encourage would-be flag wavers to also bring along anything personal that might add to their final product (specific fabric, patches, family items, as well as any fancy paints, markers, etc).

Finally a chance to incorporate yourself into statehood....one's flag could be representative of personal history, family ties, purely imaginative, or representative of idiosyncratic personal republics" - Christina

Walk and Talk

If anyone has a set of walkie talkies that we (the Show 'n Tell committee) could use for the weekend... it would mean less running around from Court House to Chapel to Dining Hall and more soaking up the atmosphere, bearing witness to magical contributions and hanging out with all the Matjies we love.

Please let me know if you can help!

Much appreciated.

A wonderland of music and light....

"Max and I will be forming our Duo Lisa B & Max Starcke as 'Sugabird & Aardwolf' once again for a magical performance in Maatjies:)

We would love to perform a short set of vocal and instrumental Karoo inspired soundscapes on the Saturday night.

If it is a quiet warm evening, we can easily do it on the lawn behind the hotel under the stars like last time, creating a mini Kirstenbosch wonderland with lighting?"

If anyone can help Max and Lisa
with some creative lighting please get in touch! Last year was bedazzling!!

kaboom!

"My husband (Jonathan Clark) and I have decided that if there’s still space for us we’ll do some magical science experiments (volcanic explosions, Van der Graaff generators etc)....." - Andrea

what happens in matjiesfontein stays in matjiesfontein

"Dear Matjies Massive

We (mary hartley and myself) are sliding in under the door at the last
minute to see if we could get our names on that esteemed festival
list.

The proposed contribution is to set up a booth (really just a table
with a banner) for people to come and share a problem or disclose a
secret (or just talk nonsense).  However they will only have 3 minutes
in which to do this.

Dr. Ruth will be the psychologist. Nurse Philippa Coleman will be
booking the pateints and facilitating the completion of an
anti-confidentiality form, so that... Director Jess Harwood can film
the "patients'" dialogues and maybe later project an interesting
collection of inserts on a big screen. Chef Mary Hartley (aka
peppermint patty) will provide patients with a slice of peppermint pie
when they are finished their session.

We promise to wear interesting outfits.

a sort of confessional i guess? yes? maybe?

Your feedback would be rad!

Warm regards,
Ruth Scott & Mary Hartley in association with Philippa Coleman and
Jessica Harwood"

oh la behind the scenes we are putting together the program so far with your great contributions.. .. gonna be a beautiful long weekend..
the whole village is looking forward to us all going there.. especially the children!

We will be posting the provisional program here sometimes very very soon..
keep your eye on this space!

Pinkovski coming to Town

we have news from out of space that Pinkovski will join us in Matjiesfontein for Show 'n Tell this year...
this is a very special thing as this character is not seen that often in the karoo..

as part of her contribution she will be wearing PINK ONLY for the entire long weekend ( "'n girl design vir my 'n pienk jumpsuit AS WE SPEAK, ek LOVE outfits!!!!! " )

secondly the fantastic short feature   Pinkovski en die wolf / Pinkovski и волк will be screened in the PINK Chapel on Sunday morning.

"Pinkovski en die Wolf is die storie van 'n alledaagse bestaan wat skielik omver gewerp word deur 'n besoek van die Wolf wat die aarde wil steel. Pinkovski veg egter verbete vir die behoud van die aarde en slaag uiteindelik daarin om die Wolf te fnuik en 'n uitkoms te skep met haar hekelpen en hekel-materiaal." Regisseur, kameraman en editor - Jurg Slabbert.

Thirdly she plans  to chrochet ( "hekel")  a giant carpet.. so we hope she can collaborate with Fi who is planning to make a giant I heart Matjies quilt...  yay for needles everyone!

Puzzle People

"We are getting our power tools out and making playground equipment for all us kids and providing a giant Heritage themed crossword puzzle to put up on an outdoor passage wall for some personal zen crossword brain exercise while sipping your morning coffee. :) " - Athena and Chris

Crafty songbird

"i would like to do two little ditties this year: a) create a special craft time project for the kiddies in the community (thinking paper mache or native american dreamcatchers - cause those were my favorites when i was a kid! but, open to ideas from other matjies), and b) sing backup for mister gilad hockman, with potential for other fun backup opps during the weekend. (i love the idea that musicians can use matjies as a platform for quirky new concepts and collaboration)." - Abbey Hatcher

Field of Light

There aren't many things in the world that make our hearts happier than Bruce Munro's Field Of Light.
We are going to attempt to re-create it (on a slightly smaller scale) at Matjiesfontein this year. We hope it will make all of your hearts happy too./ Jess + Philippa

Mates fonteen

"I am thinking about going to MF. Is there some mega line-up of Djs which will mean that I lose the chance to do what I do 4th best?

I can supply some sound, and an amp, and tripods and some greasy cables."

make Show 'n Tell yours, pack your humor , pack your great great great grandmothers patience, help set up contributions if you see other maatjies needing help, respect the antiques they are real, dont smoke inside the hotel, and have fun

if you are stuck for contribution ideas - we have many extra ideas that we are happy to share

'n tip

These are some people you wanna and need to know

on the very left: the mystery man
by the stairs from the left : introducing Julia - the lady you wanna speak to re all things related to music and sound over the weekend
In the middle is - MAGGIE ! Maggie has been working at the Lord Milner Hotel her whole life! Ask her anything, about the ghosts, your soup, her memories, the hotel secrets
on the right is - Gert. Gert Gert he is our man if he cant do it no one can! Gert was also born in the village and has been friends with Ben ( who works in the bar) since they were real small.

There are whole lots of other amazing souls in Matjies just waiting to meet and treat you!

and of course you will be making lots of hearts very happy with tips (that includes tipping the mystery man) - best way to do this is to give it directly to who ever is serving you your meal.. or make note of the name and tell reception who the tips are for..

Tim's Trio

A wonderful Trio of musicians will be joining Show 'n Tell this year. Known for their spontaneous jam sessions, and foot tapping Balkan style beats, expect to see/hear them pop up in any corner of the hotel at any given moment! What a treat!

Pack a snack pack

The lord milner hotel has a limited vegetarian menu, I repeat, limited vegetarian menu (so limited that you have to request a vegetarian meal, it's not on the menu). The coffee shop is open in the day serving light meals like salads, sandwiches and scones.

And don't forget maatjies, there are NO shops (or ATMs) in matjiesfontein so pack cash and snacks for those late night snack-attacks.

Little chop of horrors

"I wish to do botanical piece entitled "Little chop of horrors". Its a surgical number set in a dark room. With the aid of my trusty buxom assistant and dissection skills (honed to cleaver sharpness through my years of botanical dissection), I shall be distributing entrails from severed cadavers. Naturally, ones heightened senses may pick up a waft of garlic or a tang of tomato sauce, but rest assured these are Mercedes-genuine body parts. Cue the sound of tuneless violins." - Dr. Dave "Mad Scientist" Gwynne-Evans

Calling all professional knitters, renegade crocheters and those with a fetish for wool...

Knitters and crocheters, young and old, experienced or just starting out are invited to participate in a collaborative knitting installation. All materials will be supplied, however remnant wool is gladly accepted. Experience is not necessary." - Fiona

For one of our contributions Simon and myself will be joining the waitressing and bar staff over a dinner sitting serving all the Maatjies food and drinks

oh la iv always wanted to see Simon in one of those HATS !!!

the idea came when Steph swopped outfits with Joseph back in 2007
