Making Magic with Light

I am going to attempt to do something at this years show 'n tell that I have always wanted to witness myself. I am going to create a Camera Obscura... a trick of light that was discovered, hundreds of years ago, that eventually led to the invention of photography. I like the idea that, amongst all the technology that allows us to play the way we do at S&T, we'll be able to connect with, and experience the magic that inspired it all.

I will choose the exact location on the weekend itself as the potential spaces in the Lord Milner Hotel (and surrounding Karoo landscape) are so incredible for this project.

A Matjie Remembered

Another Matjie gone.. with sadness I just heard that Jackie Cleobury has passed away. I dont know the details but apparently another car crash.. caused by a drunk driver..
Second Matjie this year to go.. reminder of how quickly life can change.. we shared these memories in a tiny town called Matjiesfontein and she was there in our lives - now gone.
My heart goes out to her family and friends..

A few facts:
- Jackie came up with the idea of having a Matjies blog and having members posting to it durning the first Show'nTell
- Jackie was the creator of the first matjies blog. It was called mymatjies.blogspot.com , after the second Show'nTell we started this one..
- Jackie was the first official " committee-member" of the Matjiesfontein Show'n tell weekend. In fact she was the one who convinced me that it should be continued.
- The first Matjiesfontein meeting was held between Jackie and myself in Herritage Square.
- Jackie coined the word Show'nTell
- I met Jackie at the very first Show'nTell weekend in Matjiesfontein in 2006. Unfortunately she could not make any of the follow- ups

Playing

For our contribution (other than helping organise Matjies) we plan on showing a video we are going to edit to music of little people playing. We will see what shape it will take as it evolves, but currently we are capturing as much footage as possible. Above is a taste of what it may contain featuring Ethan and Pauli doing what they do best. Lovely.

the bureaucratic wall

what do you get when you cross a sleepy, colonial karoo town with a bureaucratic system that rivals india's? the lord milner hotel's booking office of course!

be WARNED, everything is done on paper - so follow up with the staff at the hotel to make sure that you've secured your booking. don't wait until the last minute to bang your head against the bureaucratic wall.

Photostudio 2009

For my contribution I will run a Darjeeling Limited Inspired Photo Studio in the dining cart of the Transport Museum Saturday night before dinner..

Dress up as your inner colonial, rogue, bandit or mystic and pose away.. after the shoot continue to the Dining Room in the Lord Milner Hotel for a dress-up dinner feast. It's the same menu as 1930...

This year's shots will make up a little stop-frame animation in the end...with the "daar's 'n treinna Matjiesfontein "song as the soundtrack.

journalists extraordinaire, kristin and adam are going to be producing a newspaper over the course of the weekend which we'll get to read on Sunday! just what we need to go with the lord milner's deep-fried fry-up breakfast.
